Long-term Neutrino Afterglows from Gamma-Ray Bursts

چکیده

It is widely believed that multiwavelength afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originate from relativistic blast waves. We here show that in such blast waves, a significant fraction of the energy of shock-accelerated protons would be lost due to pion production by interactions with afterglow photons. This could lead to long-term production of 10–10 eV neutrinos and sub-TeV γ-rays that accompany with usual afterglows, provided that the protons are accelerated to 10 eV in the blast waves.

Neutrino Afterglows and Progenitors of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Currently popular models for progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the mergers of compact objects and the explosions of massive stars. These two cases have distinctive environments for GRBs: compact object mergers occur in the interstellar medium (ISM) and the explosions of massive stars occur in the preburst stellar wind. We here discuss neutrino afterglows from reverse shocks as a result...

NEUTRINO AFTERGLOW FROM GAMMA-RAY BURSTS: D1018 eV

We show that a signiÐcant fraction of the energy of a c-ray burst (GRB) is probably converted to a burst of 1017È1019 eV neutrinos and multiple GeV c-rays that follow the main GRB by D10 s. If GRBs accelerate protons to D1020 eV, a suggestion that recently gained support from observations of GRB afterglows, then both the neutrinos and the c-rays may be detectable. Subject headings : acceleratio...

Last Moments in the Life of a Compact Binary System: Gravitational Waves, Gamma-ray Bursts and Magnetar Formation

The first detections of afterglows from short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have confirmed the previous suspicion that they are triggered by a different central engine than long bursts. In particular, the recent detections of short GRBs in galaxies without star formation lends support to the idea that an old stellar population is involved. Most prominent are mergers of either double neutron stars or ...

On the “canonical behaviour” of the X-ray afterglows of the Gamma Ray Bursts observed with Swift’s XRT

The “canonical behaviour” of the early X-ray afterglows of long-duration Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) —observed by the X-Ray Telescope of the SWIFT satellite— is precisely the one predicted by the Cannonball model of GRBs.

A Search for X-ray Counterparts of Gamma-ray Bursts with the Rosat Pspc

We search for faint X-ray bursts with duration 10–300 seconds in the ROSAT PSPC pointed observations with a total exposure of 1.6×107 s. We do not detect any events shorter than ∼ 100 s, i.e. those that could be related to the classic gamma-ray bursts (GRB). At the same time, we detect a number of long flares with durations of several hundred seconds. Most, but not all, of the long flares are a...
